02 Solar panels (PV) mounted on platform roofs, stations and/or workshops

Project type:
Pilot project

DB AG, NetworkRail, NS Poort/ProRail

Germany, UK, Netherlands

Ongoing (2012)

Project aims:
DB: PV modules on roof of Berlin main train station - supplying green energy. NS Poort/ProRail: Solar panels as part of solutions for upgrade of stations.

Application area:
DB: PV modules on roof of Berlin main train station. Biggest PV installation in Berlin, delivers almost 2% of the station's electricity consumption. Part of Green Terminal / DB Eco Program. NS: has mounted PV equipment on three stations: Utrecht, Amsterd vehicle(s)

Energy efficiency gains:

Deutsche Bahn: PV generators combined with energy management systems. For Berlin main station 160 MWh annually produced electricity representing 2% of annual consumption.

NS: the PV production is 58 MWh for Utrecht and 340 MWh annually for Amsterdam.

Costs (investment, operations, maintenance):

In general pay-back time for solar panels in the Netherlands is >12 years.
