01 Heat pumps (geothermal, soil reservoir, air-based)

Project type:
Implementation into fleet

Company:
NS/ProRail

Country:
Netherlands

Duration:
2011- (ongoing)

Project aims:
Use of heat pumps for railway stations to reduce the energy needed for cooling in the summer and to a smaller extent for heating in winter.

Application area:
NS Poorts has equiped 3 stations up to now with heat pumps (Amersfort, Hengelo, Arnheim). 10 more stations to follow (Utrecht and others). vehicle(s)

Description:

Heat pumps are used for the whole station, not only for single buildings.
Heat pumps extract low-grade heat from the soil (constant 12°C for NS Poort applications).

Energy efficiency gains:

The energy efficiency data is not yet available since the technology is still under investigation. Further data is to be expected due to planned new implementations in the coming years.

Costs (investments, operations, maintenance):

No economic information available yet.
