Linear motor as a booster for freight operation

Project type:
Feasibility study

(no details available)

Project aims:
Feasibility study on the integration of linear motor technology into existing rail infrastructure

Application area:
(no details available) vehicle(s)

The project investigated whether the additional component of the normal force produced by the linear motor in the wheel-rail contact could increase the traction and braking force and reduce the sensitivity to side winds. In the past the primary interest had laid in increasing the tractive force due to the additional tangential force produced by the linear motor. One aspect within the project assessed the technological and economic feasibility of integrating linear motor technology into parts of the rail infrastructure. The considered purpose of such a traction system would be to provide an additional booster for heavy freight operation on steep slopes.
